THORNTOWN, Indiana | Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023: Charles Bookwalter, a former Green Beret running for Congress in Indiana’s 4th Congressional District, issues the following statement:

The push for the United States to support another war in the Middle East is incredibly dangerous as such a war will almost inevitably lead to war with Iran and the death of millions of people, most of them innocents.

There should be no rush to war. Not this time. Americans should reflect on the last two decades of war and remember how much was spent and how much was lost while so little, if anything, was gained.

There should be no U.S. funding of Israel’s war in Gaza, or any other war that doesn’t involve U.S. national security interests. Having troops on the ground puts the United States military at risk of being drawn into another decades-long war.

As a former Green Beret who did two combat tours, I can speak for many hardened veterans when I say this: They are not going to go fight another Middle Eastern war. The majority of them now see that these are not wars fought for noble reasons but are often fought for other purposes that are hidden from the American people.

Instead of sending American forces into Israel and the wider region, we should be pulling our troops out — out of Israel, out of Iraq, out of Syria and out of the Sudan.

Our nation is in crisis. We need our young men here at home where they can start families, open businesses and become leaders in their communities. We cannot afford to lose them to another war that has no defined mission and therefore no end. It’s time to say NO: Not this time.

We must instead work towards a peaceful solution to this conflict – a long-term solution to stop the killing in Gaza and in Israel.

America should be a broker for peace throughout the world.
